Hungary are a side who qualified for Euro 2016 via the play offs. After finishing third in qualification Group I, they were drawn against Norway whom they surprisingly managed to beat 3-1 on aggregate. A major negative for this side is the fact they qualified 3rd in what was probably the weakest group as they finished behind Romania and Northern Ireland who are both quoted at triple figure prices on the Euro 2016 outright betting markets.

The majority of the Hungarian squad plays in their national league with only a few exceptions playing outside of their homeland. This lack of quality comes through when you look at their results during qualifying - 4 wins, 4 draws and 2 losses looks ok on paper, but the caliber of team they faced was very average to say the least and if they are to make an impact in France they will have to improve in leaps and bounds.

One of the losses came against a Greek side who are very short on goals but did manage to get 4 past this Hungarian outfit, Greece do not usually score that amount in a season let alone in one game, the other was against table toppers Northern Ireland at home which is more respectable but far from impressive.

Another big negative for this side is the lack of goal scoring options, 2 goals was the most any individual player managed during qualifying and this apparent drought of finishing was easy to see against minnows and world ranked 90th side the Faroe Islands, as Hungary only managed to win each game by a single goal and only putting 3 past their defence in both games put together. This is a worry and goals may be few and far between this summer for Hungary.

Chance Of Winning the Tournament

Hungary's involvement at Euro 2016 will more than likely end after the group stage. Although they are not in a group of death by any stretch of the imagination, they are simply outclassed, there's also another lowly ranked team in Iceland drawn with them which will have been comforting for all connected to this side when the draw was made. However, Hungary should still be on the bus home after the last group match.

The Hungarians main battle may be with a team in another group as their neighbours and bitter rivals Romania will also be at Euro 2016 and the competition for these 2 teams may be who can get the most points rather than who can progress the furthest.

Tournament Record

There's no recent European Championship form to go off, Hungary last qualified in 1972 reaching the Quarter-finals with a further Quarter-final appearance back in 1964. Perhaps sometimes less is more!

Euro 2016 Group F Analysis

Hungary Euro 2016 Tips
Hungary : It's a fair assumption to say, Hungary are a poor side

Any group may have proved a struggle for this side and that will almost definitely be the case in Group F. They are joined by Austria, Portugal and Iceland, there doesn't seem to be an obvious source of points as both Austria and Portugal have very strong squads and will be looking to advance to the later stages of the tournament.

Hungary's best chance of earning a point will come against Iceland on the 18th June. This game should be very competitive and may be decided by just a single goal and for this reason you would have to side with the higher scoring Iceland which could mean that Hungary go home with no points whatsoever.

Below is a list of the 4 teams drawn in Group F and their FIFA World Ranking, as you can see, Hungary are the 3rd highest ranked team, just behind Austria and Portugal. But i wouldn't put too much faith in the ranking system - make no mistake, Hungary are a bad side.

  • Austria ( 11 )
  • Hungary ( 18 )
  • Iceland ( 35 )
  • Portugal ( 8 )

Top Goal Scorers in Qualifying

Hungary struggled to score during qualifying, with 3 players sharing the title of leading goalscorer, Krisztian Nemeth, a former Liverpool youth player who now plies his trade at Kansas City Wizards, Tamas Priskin, formally of Watford and Daniel Bode all scored 2 goals each.

Hungary Stage of Elimination Betting

It is hard to be anything but negative about Hungary's chances at Euro 2016. They will surely attain 0 points from their games against Portugal and Austria in the group stage and their fixture against Iceland could follow the same pattern, as on paper Iceland have the much stronger side. It would be a minor shock if Hungary could even register points in France and they will surely leave as soon as the group stages are over.

Balazs Dzudzsak will be the man that Hungary look to for inspiration. The captain seems to be at the heart of everything created by this side and he has a decent goal return to back that up. He has 18 goals in 76 games playing from the left hand side of midfield but he also possesses terrific dead ball ability and will be tasked with taking everything from corners, free kicks to penalties.

Playing Style

Hungary do not have the class to play possession football, which means this side usually find themselves pinned in their own half for most of their games. Their style of play is based on work rate and keeping their opponents chances to a minimum.

They do not have a player they can call on to turn the game on it's head with a moment of magic, so Hungary usually play as a team to create chances. Their best opportunity for goals usually comes from crosses into the box being knocked down for a midfielder to finish, this may be scrappy but proves effective.
